Dunedin Information - Activities & Attractions

Dunedin is located on the southeast coast of the South Island of New Zealand, at the head of the Otago Peninsula. Dunedin is a safe and compact city with a number of fantastic restaurants, shops and attractions all within easy walking distance of the city centre, 'The Octagon'.

Dunedin maintains a position of national importance as a major seat of learning with a strong arts and cultural heritage. Dunedin is regarded as one of the best preserved Victorian and Edwardian cities in the southern hemisphere. You can get a real taste and feel for the city by visiting some of Dunedin's historical architecture. Take a walk to the massive stone Flemish Renaissance-style Dunedin Railway Station, the University clock-tower building, the Gothic Revival Dominican Priory or even visit Larnach Castle, the home of an early politician.

Enjoy the vibrant and upbeat feel of the city with the large number of sidewalk cafés, restaurants, bars, shops and entertainment venues on offer. Boutiques, galleries, the theatre and weekly craft markets will keep you entertained throughout your stay. The city has a number of parks and gardens perfect for a leisurely stroll or a summer picnic.

Dunedin, New Zealand, is renowned for its incredible wildlife. Visits to see the coastal colonies of the world's rarest penguins, including the yellow-eyed penguin and the world's only mainland breeding colony of the Royal albatross and rare New Zealand sea lions are all within close proximity to the centre of the city.

If you are into water sports, then you have definitely come to the right place. Dunedin's harbour is home to a large number of water sports. It is ideal for wind surfing, yachting, kayaking, canoeing, rowing and fishing. Dunedin also has a number of beaches around the city, including St Clair beach which is known to be one of the best surfing beaches in New Zealand.
